Dr. Combs works with adolescents and adults embracing a direct, compassionate approach. While well-versed in psychiatric diagnoses, the focus of treatment is on the whole person rather than a specific set of behaviors or symptoms.
Each client will receive an individually tailored treatment drawing from evidence-based psychological treatments. Dr. Combs works most often from the framework of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Acceptance and commitment therapy is a branch of clinical behavior analysis. It is an empirically-based psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies along with commitment and behavior-change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility.
The therapeutic relationship is also an agent of change. Clients are encouraged to develop and explore their most authentic selves. Emotional vulnerability in therapy can often foster resilience and courage in relationships with significant others, family, and friends.
Dr C develops a genuine relationship with clients prior to making recommendations. Clients share appreciation of how Dr. Combs challenges them to compassionately push forward through fear and anxiety, allowing themselves to be uncomfortable in the service of creating the life they desire. She believes difficulties in living inform us about where and how we need to grow.
